Its closest comparison is “Wonder Woman” in 2017, directed by Patty Jenkins, which raked in about $38 million domestically on opening day, according to Box Office Mojo. Things are heating up in Metropolis, as DC Studios co-head James Gunn has announced he is writing a new feature film about Superman. In step with the new project, Gunn has also revealed that Henry Cavill will not return as the hero. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill wrote. On Tuesday, Jenkins tweeted a lengthy statement saying she was “was open to considering anything asked of me” in regards to a potential third project, which was scrapped.
CNN —Patty Jenkins has some things she would like to clear up. The director posted a lengthy note on social media to have her say after reports that DC FIlms (which is owned by CNN’s parent company) would not be moving ahead with a third installment of the “Wonder Woman” franchise. “It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. Jenkins also wrote that she does not want “what has been a beautiful journey with WW to land on negative note.”“I have loved and been so honored to be the person who got to make these last two Wonder Woman films. I can attest that all of Peter and my interactions with you were only pleasant and professional.
Henry Cavill says he will not return as Superman

CNN —DC fans across the globe collectively mourned Wednesday as British actor Henry Cavill said he will no longer be donning the red cape as Superman in the DC Comics extended cinematic universe. Cavill even made a cameo as Superman in a mid-credits scene at the end of “Black Adam,” the DC film starring Dwayne Johnson. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” Gunn said.
The third "Wonder Woman" movie is no longer moving forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Director Patty Jenkins' film apparently doesn't fit in with future plans for the DC movie universe. The report follows an Instagram post from star Gal Gadot, who shared on Tuesday a photo of herself as Wonder Woman, with a caption that said she "Can't wait to share her next chapter with you." The first "Wonder Woman" in 2017 was a critical and box-office hit, grossing $822 million globally. 2020's sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984," earned just $170 million, but was released amid the coronavirus pandemic and debuted simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max.
He said then that a movie-a-year strategy for "Star Wars" was "too much, too fast." But Disney might have slammed on the brakes a little too hard: The only "Star Wars" movie to be released since then has been "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," in 2019. And now, there isn't a "Star Wars" film on the theatrical release calendar until 2025. It's unclear if Iger foresaw a six-year wait, at least, when he said back in 2018 that "Star Wars" movie output would slow. But Lucasfilm hasn't made any public commitment to any of them as the next stage of "Star Wars" on the big screen.
A new "Star Wars" movie is under development with a pair of buzzy names already attached, according to media reports. Damon Lindelof, showrunner for "Lost," "The Leftovers" and "Watchmen," is co-writing the new Lucasfilm movie, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of "Ms. Marvel" signed on to direct, according to media entertainment site Deadline. But the upcoming feature marks the first "Star Wars" film set for theaters since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" was a massive success for the franchise, grossing $1 billion at the global box office. Other "Star Wars" film projects from Taika Waititi, Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige have yet to be officially announced by the studio or given release dates.

REUTERS/Henry Nicholls/FilesSept 15 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) on Thursday pulled"Star Wars" movie "Rogue Squadron" from next year's film schedule and gave no indication on when the company would release a new movie in the blockbuster space franchise. The movie would have been the first "Star Wars" film to reach theaters since "The Rise of Skywalker" debuted in December 2019. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why the Jenkins' film was pulled from its upcoming slate. Disney has released several "Star Wars" TV shows in the past few years on the Disney+ streaming service.
Questions about the fate of Patty Jenkins' "Rogue Squadron" began circulating nearly a year ago, and intensified after the Star Wars film went unmentioned at Disney's annual D23 Expo last weekend. The suggestion was that Jenkin's Star Wars feature would be punted down the calendar to another date. "Rogue Squadron" was set to be the first theatrical Star Wars film since the 2019 release of "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," which received middling reviews and generated over $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide. The path for future Star Wars films has been unclear since "Rise of Skywalker" was released. There's even talk that "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson is still attached to a stand-alone trilogy set within the Star Wars universe.
